At the age of about nine, I was welcomed by an Indian family to share food and smiles so their son had a friend. The scent of Indian cuisine brings back this memory and prompts me to question “Does exclusion have a place in today’s society?”

After a recent trip to the opticians, I noticed that the person checking my eyes seemed especially trustworthy, perhaps influenced by their calm manner and even their black-and-white clothing. It made me wonder: is our sense of destiny shaped by the people we surround ourselves with, or does it come from somewhere else?

This is about the feeling of loss; based on a close relatives who is very important to me, this painting is about her grief in losing her husband 25 years ago. She still finds time to mourn and laugh but has never let go. Posing the question “Is it right to live for the past or should we celebrate the future?”
